St. John has a strong history of feeding its Elwood neighbors and one very important way is through our End of Month Meal Ministry. Our dedicated volunteer team prepares and delivers nearly 600 meals once each month.
The next meal is Saturday, May 31. We only are able deliver meals in Elwood. If you need a meal delivered or wish to pick up a meal, please call the church at 765-552-6125 between 9 and 10 a.m. on Saturday, the 31st.
We welcome volunteers to help cook on Friday, the 30th, and package/deliver on Saturday, the 31st. If you are interested in helping out, please call the church at 765-552-6125 and leave a message.
Finally, if you would like to support this ministry financially, donations may be placed in the offering plate or mailed to the church. Please mark these gifts as "EOM Ministry".
St. John serves God by helping feed our neighbours.
First Sunday, Food Sunday! is an effort to build on the food ministries already in place at St. John. We strive to involve more of our congregation in providing food to needy people!
Please fill a grocery bag with food and bring it to church the first Sunday of each month. Grocery bags will be passed out after worship the week before each First Sunday, Food Sunday! You may use you own bags if you miss picking one up at church.
Place your food donations in the red baskets by the altar before worship or bring them forward during Communion. The food will go to the Elwood Community Pantry & Morrisett Center.
We will contact Morrisett Center monthly to see what specific items they need the most and include this information with the grocery bags.
If you would like to give a monetary donation, please place it in the offering plate noting whether you would prefer the gift to support the Morrisett Center or St. John’s own End of Month Meal Ministry. EOM cooks and delivers 600 meals the last weekend of each month.
Forget your groceries or monetary gifts on First Sunday, Food Sunday! – no problem!! Gifts can still be made on the other Sundays – on those days the red baskets will be in the narthex near the entrance to Old Fellowship Hall.
For the rest of 2025, our First Sunday, Food Sunday! events are: June 1, July 6, August 3, September 7, October 5, November 2 and December 7.
Our organist, Sarah, is a graduate of both St. Olaf College and Indiana University School of Music. She leads the congregation in music on our small but mighty Wicks organ.
The combined Our Blessed Savior and St John Choir is off for the summer, but check back in late summer to see when practice picks back up.
St. John's Bible Study is on summer break.
In the meantime, continue your study of scripture! Weekly readings may be found on the back of the Celebrate insert inside the Sunday bulletin and daily readings are available at the ELCA website below:
S.A.M. Sherilyn's "Exploring Lutheranism" class is on summer recess. Check back in late August to see when it resumes!
ELCA Disaster Relief is asking for donations to respond to people impacted by recent storms and flooding in the midwest, hurricanes throughout Florida, Tennessee and the Carolinas and wildfires in southern California.
Please visit the ELCA website at Lutheran Disaster Response for more information on how you can help.
St. John has a garden with plots available to anyone in the community who would like to grow vegetables!
The garden is now open for the 2025 growing season!!
If you are interested in a plot for future seasons, please call the church office at 765-552-6125 and leave a message with your contact information.
Gardeners' Meals resume on Wednesday, June 4, with a hot dog cookout at 6:00 p.m. More details to follow and everybody is welcome!
The ELCA encourages congregations to participate its Day of Service as a response to God's love for each of us by making an impact in the community. St. John's first service project in 2024 was a fine day of fellowship, serving others and being served in return!
